I think that this picture helps describe Gene to a great extent. In chess you have to be thoughtful and intelligent, along with competitive. Gene shows all of these characteristics throughout the book.
Theme tie in
Gene really supports the theme of Flowing. He always was doing as someone told him, and never made decisions for himself. Despite the fact they are young, he still never really spoke up.
Analysis
Being the Protagonist and Narrator of the book, you get a deep insight of Gene. A lot is learned about his quirky nature, and bad habits. Gene's best friend is Phineas, but at some points in the book hes his worst enemy. Gene is very jealous when it comes to his friends, and to the other people at Devon. He is also very skeptical of everything, he thinks about everything too much. "Yes, he had practically saved my life. he had also practically lost it for me"(Knowles 33). This quote was from right after Finny had saved Gene from falling from a tree. At times Gene doesn't really know who he is, he tends to Knowles 85)Theme tie in
